The first river civilization emerged about 5000 years ago in Mesopotamia, the region between rivers Tigris and Euphrates.
The area was occupied by different people who came and settled, establishing powerful empires consecutively.
Architecture
Significant contributions to architecture were done by Mesopotamians, such as the arch and the vault.
They built manificent palaces, walls and temples. Let´s see the most outstanding examples.
Temples were called Ziggurats. These were like stepped pyramids with a sanctuary at the top where priests directed religious rituals.
